A pair of them have been eyeing the young plants up, and at one point I swear I saw a recipe book under a wing...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">At this point Id like to point out that Mr Fairysteps is 6ft 4 (giant) and the 'cabbage run' is also 6ft 4... how big is he expecting the cabbages to grow I asked? Starting with trousers... It's been a mixed bag to be honest. I perfected the flares pattern and its great, looks good etc, but Im not 100% sold on it. Got to admit that having reached the grand age of fifty, comfort seems to be my top priority now. That and simplicity. Im just not so keen on anything remotely fussy anymore. Not to mention the fact that my stupid tummy balloons to the size of a beach ball on a regular, sporadic basis and is useless in a tight fitted trouser waistband (why didn't I think about this?). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Looking in my wardrobe at all the frilly bloomers and myriad of colours I feel uninspired to wear any of it. Maybe the whole weight loss thing is to blame, and maybe I 'hid' in my clothes before without really knowing I did it? Who knows.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What I do know is that change is afoot and I must evolve. I mustn't be afraid of change, but instead must explore new possibilities. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So my dears, I have bought a sewing book and some cotton jersey, as well as special hand sewing thread and needles and decided to tackle some of the Alabama Chanin wardrobe staples. I love the simple clean lines of it all. I may even adapt some of my own hand drafted patterns and make them for the shop, who knows. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My biggest challenge will be the EZRA coat, which I have to admit I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. Ive been self isolating since 1994 when my first baby arrived so its not been very different for me... up here. But, I do know its had a profound effect on many, which is a very sad business. Bearing in mind that much like Brexit, we have probably, mostly, all started to suffer with Brain Numbness when we here any news on the subject, so that's As Much As I Will Say on the matter.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Let's talk shoes instead and pass a jolly few minutes in Fairysteps Land :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What have I been up to? Gosh, what haven't I been up to! I think a list is needed because there is so much to catch up on.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><ul><li>Obvs the Scotland trip was cancelled. Whisky Wagon is up on jacks in the big shed as Mr Fairysteps has moved onto more pressing matters. This consists of his yearly battle with Mother nature, mainly brambles, stinging nettles and ivy this year, plus veg growing on an industrial scale... I know nettles are great for caterpillars etc... but for heaven's sakes. If we left them all the caterpillars would in fact overrun the property, possibly even Devon (the entire South West of England might even sink under the weight of the invasion), and isn't there enough going on without us causing that sort of calamity? Maybe the van will be finished this year for local trips to the seaside, crossing fingers. He is also super busy getting our Airbnb ready for next year, masses and masses of work to do yet ;)</li><li>I changed my name back to its original one, Fairysteps. It was strange but it just felt the right thing to do. It almost feels like time travel in an odd way. I can't think of how else to describe it, but it was most definitely the right thing to do. Anything that turns back time has to be a winner ;)</li><li>I closed custom orders. I know, what am I like! But by golly it was needed. I honestly haven't had this much enthusiasm and joy in my work for years. I literally am working my socks off, yet I feel like Im on constant holiday. Well as far as Im concerned that says it all. Sadly there have been grumbles about custom going :( but the majority seem very happy about all the new stuff I am making. Alas, I can't please everyone, as much as I try. But I do know that if I burn out there won't be any shoes for anyone, custom or otherwise, so I simply must follow my instincts on how I need to work and what options I offer. Note: I still feel guilty though...</li><li>I revisited an old style and have been busy tweaking that pattern to perfection. Ive made several size runs now and I am so pleased with them. If I was doing custom I wouldn't have had time.</li><li>On a personal level, all my grown up children are back home living which has been a wonderful treat to have the whole litter back together. Obviously I don't want them to stay forever, I mean come on, I know I'm a good Mother but there are limits ;) but it's good to see them safe and well and busy. I am so lucky!</li><li>My Slimming World journey continues, happily I can say, because I just can't imagine living any other way now. Eating healthily every single day feels so good. I am now lighter than when I met my Husband when I was just 17 years old. I am not at target yet, but it's so close I can almost touch it :) I honestly don't know why the government doesn't promote the programme? All the NHS diet advice programmes seem to be for calorie counting. Ive don't that. Yes I lost lots of weight. Yes I was utterly miserable. Yes I put it all back on. I was hungry all the time and it made me obsess over how much food I was eating, which is most unhealthy. Slimming world taught me about all the healthy foods I can eat as much as I want to of. It was simply a case of filling up on those and waiting for my tastes to change so that I didn't crave junk foods anymore. I am 1.5lbs away from my 3 stone loss award ;) Thats in just under a year. Woo Hoo.</li></ul><br />So thats me caught up. Lots of other bits too, but I daresay you've developed a nervous twitch in your left eye by now so that will be enough for now. Lets have some shoe pictures instead :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjqOjhOVu2l26D0c4I6VUXZmlRyXlpO3qSiU_0wPt8T0lyxLV5AGh8mNwFfX4Yr5gU20hKMj7u0wncZELqT689By_LkMD_QXfUTTAohq-cR8Qi1ommJJKbdLBbQYakWR6K9bd5XIv2FCp3/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1500" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjqOjhOVu2l26D0c4I6VUXZmlRyXlpO3qSiU_0wPt8T0lyxLV5AGh8mNwFfX4Yr5gU20hKMj7u0wncZELqT689By_LkMD_QXfUTTAohq-cR8Qi1ommJJKbdLBbQYakWR6K9bd5XIv2FCp3/w480-h640/20200525_110553.jpg" width="480" /></a><br /><br />Finally faced my buckle hang up and decided that buckles are in fact rather blooming marvelous, so for heaven's sakes Ren, get on and start using them more. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Welcome to our latest restoration project :) Its super exciting this one because its going to hopefully enable the Big Adventure we have planned in May. A road trip from home to the Scottish highlands and up along the west coast. This is to celebrate and mark our combined 50th birthdays (10 months apart). Ive only ever got so far as the Lake District so its practically a Moon trip for me. Its also my Faerysteps van because my leather merchants are all 'up country' so obviously I cant go past and not buy leather ;)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finding the right van has been a right slog though. Poor Mr F has spent so much time trawling through junk online. We even visited a few heaps to have a look. One such notable heap looked perfect in the pictures, but on arrival the entire base, thats everything from 2 foot down, was rusty as an anchor. The chap offered us £500 off the asking price for 'a spot of paint' to 'put things right'. The only thing that van needed to put it right was a last trip to the scrap yard... needless to say we didnt buy it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Please take note at this point of the number plate. You can see where the name came from now. Number plate = WW + Trip to Scotland, land of distilleries, well it had to be the Whisky Wagon didnt it. I'd have preferred something tea related to be honest, but didnt feel it prudent to mention this minor point to Mr F after all his efforts....</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is rust on this one. It came from the Welsh mountains where it was being used as a mini bus for disabled passengers, hence it has lots of seats and a wheelchair lift in the back. All of which will be removed during the big strip down. It is a factory fitted minibus though so professionally lined with grey carpet, etc. Very swish if you look aside from the mould all over the seats and floor... Floor carpets are being removed for certain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rust can be treated and Mr F intends adding a charcoal strip along the bottom there in line with the lights. I might try to get some tree silhouettes to pop along the top. Want to keep it all very low key though. Just chuffed as punch its a dark silver body and not white. I was anticipating an instant migraine every time I approached it when the sun shone else.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Someone very thoughtfully tried removing the stickers. With a scotch pad and stanley knife... What were they thinking? So that's got to be sorted too.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTGll-yRf7VELc_2_y-57R_HWoZi_OmGCb0xOYqfFqBd-u99iCaMLvYk9aE4xMuvP3MCyhBagq3vaCK49ArwBZXaYM_G2BB4YSLcSjsFCDabGopnwBLabtCF7xZl5bmCyLCeco9W6p8P4L/s1600/20200204_132440.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTGll-yRf7VELc_2_y-57R_HWoZi_OmGCb0xOYqfFqBd-u99iCaMLvYk9aE4xMuvP3MCyhBagq3vaCK49ArwBZXaYM_G2BB4YSLcSjsFCDabGopnwBLabtCF7xZl5bmCyLCeco9W6p8P4L/s640/20200204_132440.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Wheel rims are rusted and look awful so these need removing and wire brushing, undercoat and top coat. Same dark charcoal paint. It shows less dirt than white.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So then. Thats the outside at the very start of it all. So far Mr F has had a run around day yesterday getting the speed restrictor removed. That was a real worry, because if that had to stay we were relisting it for sale and starting the search all over again. Its such a relief that has gone :) Next its into the barn to dry off ready for stripping out the seats, floor, wheel chair lift and a myriad of other bits. Then a thorough internal clean of all whats left before the refit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have 8 weeks at the most to get it ready to roll. Watch this space ;) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here I am... bold as brass! Why is my hair never brushed when I take a picture? I was asked by the lovely Jess to let you know how long its grown since the last update, so here I am. Silver streak is spreading, but because our water is very coppery it is in fact, going green. Thats fine, I quite like green, it makes me feel slightly mermaid-ish. The fact that I don't swim can be Glossed Over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whilst on a vanity streak I must say that just having hit 50 has made me Take Myself In Hand. I joined Slimming World back in June last Summer 2019 and my journey of discovery of both health and wellbeing continues. I am so happy I started and highly recommend it to anyone who feels theyve rather lost the plot. I adore food and cooking, but in latter years, especially without the whole litter living at home to cook for, I had fell out of love with cooking. Everything was becoming very much drudge, with my weight gradually creeping up each year, till last Winter when it drastically rose. Buttons were at breaking point, literally. Early Summer came and I was holding water like a good potting compost. Nothing fitted, Fridays weekly slog up the hill was feeling like a marathon and I was running out of new tent patterns to sew up into dresses that I could hide in... you get the picture ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went to the group meetings for 3 weeks, but you know me, 99% recluse so that had to stop. Luckily you can transfer to online so that was perfect for me. It was hard at first re-learning a new way to think, shop, cook and eat. But its second nature now and I really don't even fancy half of what I used to crave over. Its forever though, I won't change away from food optimising now because I love all the recipes so much. Plus, I am not quite at target yet so the journey continues. Its a way of life to stay healthy as far as I can see and Im ever so grateful that those clever people at Slimming World wrote it all down for me and made it so easy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started at 13 st 1 lb - Current weight 10st 10 lb.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
O look, hairs just washed again. But importantly, I have legs! Who knew. And a waist, which was getting hidden under several rubber rings of tummy... Gosh I feel better. I even bought some Snag tights in various colours to wear with different skirts which I havent worn for over 20 years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ive threatened my youngest that when I reach my target weight (10 lbs to go) I will be making some bright pink hot pants to wear next time she has friends visit ;) she has threatened to disown me if I do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Always exciting working on something new, even if it's not strictly new ;)<br />
I haven't made this boot in over 10 years. Originally called 'Ophelia' she was popular at the time but I moved onto other styles and she fell by the wayside. Whilst sorting through old image files I rediscovered her again and decided to revamp the pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu5Yjp6Uiv58-MWwgaGt10AUqxjbsRXAO6S03jILnG-4JH-GoKlK1Kz7L20B-6_Bt7vedB0R7R17xVsHDsj1OKl3B0SS4ptfaWrXqzCifrapVpDKxF8ChBQW2EljacvTsPAjQAaVfUOW5o/s1600/1580393853479914-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu5Yjp6Uiv58-MWwgaGt10AUqxjbsRXAO6S03jILnG-4JH-GoKlK1Kz7L20B-6_Bt7vedB0R7R17xVsHDsj1OKl3B0SS4ptfaWrXqzCifrapVpDKxF8ChBQW2EljacvTsPAjQAaVfUOW5o/s1600/1580393853479914-1.png" width="400" />
</a>
</div>
<br />
I spent a very happy day redrafting patterns and tweaking here and there till they were just right. I then spent another day sifting through leather stock to see which ones would be most suitable for this style. Not all leathers work with all styles so that's a tricky one to be honest. I think the lighter weight leathers will be best to keep the boot super supple so the cut can really tuck in around the ankle and over the instep.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMUDy2sxLKRMa3fKyR5LBBuXYbMsLwcb1Q_hxTO2nBLEBj8eDVFOYEzOm-zcyMjr6F7_BQspmxqhyMwCL4pQ-754d7EncP5xHesKnpa_48F6BZ5keMgcVEvxzQHLyYSY5FWBobEolAz0-r/s1600/1580393842359454-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<br />
I plan to make an initial full size run, half of which are finished and awaiting lacing and finishing touches, the other half on my table now. Not long for the big reveal ;) I will then continue with stock leathers in some rather special combinations. I have colours for darker basic boots, like browns and dark greys, blues and greens as well as super pretty pastels to mix up. There are even a few patterned ones.<br />
Gosh its exciting making these. As ever, updates on Instagram of when the new stock is ready.<br />
<br />

<strong>Other news from HQ:</strong><br />
<ul>
<li>The shop has had a revamp as well as the leather swatch. Some colours are running out and won't be replaced so I thought it best to remove them from the swatch now.</li>
<li>My snowdrops are well and truly up so as far as I am concerned Spring is coming... and about time too. I am sick of Winters wet, damp, cold misery. I am finding myself dreaming of light nights and walks without raincoats and woolly everything's.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Till the next time.<br />

Lets drop right back in with a round up some recent makes... Lots of Clara's on the order books recently so had to share the 'rear' view of these glorious peacock blue ones. Gosh I love blue so much. Its the colour of sky and water, life essentials, maybe that's why Im drawn to it so much as I get older?</div>

I havent blogged about my latest new style have I... please meed Pod. Rather fine even if I say so myself ;) Im so chuffed to bits with how this turned out. Named after Pod, Arriettys father in one of my favourite books, The Borrowers, by Mary Norton. Pod is a seamless delight for your feet. Ive been holding off choosing a colour for myself while I gave it some thought. They will be my new walking shoes for several years to come so I wanted to make sure I picked a universal colour scheme for my current wardrobe. I wear so much dark blue and black and grey now that I feel inkwell is my best choice. Its also super soft leather. A little brown wren for me.</div>

There is a definite nip in the air. I felt it on Wednesday and its got progressively cooler since. Plus the ever rampant Virginia creeper is blushing so that's a sure sign if ever there was one that the season is on the move. Summer has dusted off her golden coat and will soon be leaving with the Swallows.</div>

Talking of dust, gosh did I have a good clean up in my workshop. Nothing like a good dusting and clearing of cobwebs to really inspire you. I had a good shuffle round too, although, I must say I did have to move my sewing machine back to where it was again. It threw me completely and I kept trying to sit down to an empty space. Very discombobulating... ;) But some new stock boots did get cut out which is a good start.</div>

And onto the boots. Gosh I am having fun. I recently had a flower and butterfly stamp made up which for me has meant I no longer have to cut the tiny shapes with scissors (poor old hands are getting creakier every winter...). Can't even begin to tell you how wonderful that is. Only took me 16 years, but never mind. I'm going with 'Better late than Never' on that one. Hence, I am going flower mad lately, squiggle stitching and layering till my heart is bursting.</div>

I bought this glorious lipstick pink leather 15 years ago, and Ive been saving it for so long... Fabric and yarn hoarders among you Will Know just where I'm coming from by writing that. But, its no good chaps. My shelves are literally dripping in leather and I must crack on and use it. I'm just going to go mad and make as many Tinker boots as is humanly possible to eat into my leather stores. I may even break through to Narnia at the back of the shelves by Christmas...</div>

If I sneak in 2 pairs each time in between batches of current orders I should be able to get quite a few made for the Winter ahead. Thats the plan anyway, but its always dependent on time. They won't all be pink, don't worry. I know pink isn't for everyone, but somewhere out there, each pair has its owner waiting for them. Thats how I always see it as I make them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I shall be making batches of blues, greens, purples and browns. Just like my leathers are laid out. That way I can pick out some rather yummy limited edition leathers which aren't on the swatch. Do expect lots of 'Flutterby Garden' (shown above) and 'Neverland' boots. I am especially excited about the brown ones. Getting more and more drawn to brown as I get older.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Size wise, I am afraid there will be limited sizes :( Only UK 4 / 5 / 6 / 7. I am so sorry if this isn't your size. Its just that UK 3 and UK 8 are so rarely ordered that making stock boots to sit on the shelf isn't really very practical or rewarding. But, on a brighter note... The entire size range UK 3 to 8 is available for the Everyday Collection which does contain our popular Willo and Wisp boots. Yay!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Winky and Jack are keeping busy, catching sunshine, ticks and fleas. I shaved Winky at the start of the Summer and my goodness, just as well I did! She looked like she'd had a fight with a shaver (which she sort of did...) but she loves being fur coat free. It got so long and knotty with sticky burrs etc and the comb was hurting, so shaving was the only option really. I left her wonderful Elizabethan ruff, because removing it would have been A Step Too Far.</div>

<br />
My goodness, who knew leaving the house for 3 hours could be such an adventure. An adventure that included; indecision, fear, shock, joy, disbelief, disgust, then more shock... and they wonder why I like staying home ;)<br />
<br />
We rarely go out for meals. Years of scrimping to buy home etc have instilled almost miser like tendencies in me. Except for giving to charity or family, I like doing that :) (and buying seasalt dresses...). But, I am trying to loosen the purse strings. So, with this in mind we decided to throw caution to the wind yesterday evening, and six o'clock saw us in my little car heading down the big hill in search of a pub and food. It was really exciting. Yep, major. For about 2 miles...<br />
<br />
I was driving as a treat for Mr F who always drives. I'm okay day and night on the lanes, but my silly head goes yumpy on big roads. I saw lights ahead further back the lane, over the top of the hedge, and dipped mine. Then time slowed down... a landrover, with a big light bar on the roof which was the equivalent to a flood lit Wembley stadium, was hurtling towards us. And I do mean hurtling, because he wasn't stopping. At all. He started skidding on the muddy road and went UP the hedge and came down again, juddering to a halt right in front of my little cars bonnet. A split second more and he would have rolled over onto us. Squat. End of. I'm not exaggerating either.<br />
<br />
Mr F was highly animated beside me in the passenger seat. My ear on that side was very red with embarrassment. He was so cross. I've had near misses before, but that was so close. All I can say is that Lady Fate smiled on us last night.<br />
<br />
So... on I drove in search of a pub and sweet tea, because I needed some pronto. First village pub, looked through window, saw very meaty menu and thought, no good. Crossed road, looked in next pub window, empty. Back in car. Heading to next village, parked, found pub and found a sign outside saying No Food on Tuesday night. Okay. Back in car. Fed up. Heading home. Stop car on way home, pull in layby, ask ourselves "what are we doing?", turnaround car, head back to first pub in other village. Park up, go in, greeted warmly, look at extensive, fantastic menu, that included lots of vegetarian meals hidden from people snooping in windows :) and order tea.<br />
<br />
It was so lovely. They even turned the flashing lights on the Christmas tree off for me so I wouldn't get a migraine. The owner is a retired Thatcher and he was so lovely. I think he may be a relative having seen his surname outside when we were on our way out. He was also a migraine sufferer. Really lovely man. The food was exceptional and the service equally so.<br />
<br />
As I was just emptying my teapot before the journey back home, I saw something unbelievable on the table opposite that made me cringe. Forgive me for talking about a stranger, but, o my goodness, what have manners come to? The table opposite was a party of 4. Two women and two men. The chap in question had some sort of meaty dish. I think they are called ribs because he picked them up with his hands, but going by his following behaviour, he possibly always used his hands to eat. I was happily drinking my tea and chatting to Mr F, when I spotted over his shoulder, this other chap, flossing his teeth with a folded £10 note.<br />
Yes, you heard that right. Picking bits of meat out of his teeth with a used, dirty bank note, in plain sight. It took about 10 minutes, and I expect he paid for the meal with it too. He even used two hands, getting the note right in there at the back of the mouth and chatting away as he did so. Urgghhh.<br />
<br />
The Queen flossed... who knew...<br />
<br />
I am home, civilised behaviour and all. Teapot at elbow, installed in my rightful place, my workshop. Ready to mark up the next batch of leather for snipping. My kind of bliss and grateful for it.<br />
<br />

Lots to report for November, get comfy. Most notably, new tall boots have just started being added to the shop. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The November camping stint went well (by camping standards). Mr F got to see his bikey friends, and I camped in the van in frosty conditions in Winter which was a bit of an adventure. I can honestly say that the pub Did Not know how to make a decent cup of tea. It was grey and lukewarm... One was Not amused. I ending up having to move onto the hard stuff at the public bar, having just milk instead. It was a small room, stuffed to the ceiling with leather clad males and a wood burner roaring in the background. I got so dehydrated that I woke on Sunday morning with a splitting headache and was ready for home. Felt very guilty because I did not say goodbye to the party.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On a lighter note... little pink kettle and tea making facilities on the back of our van at 7 o'clock on a frosty Sunday morning drew quite a crowd. I was inside the van, behind the curtain, quietly nursing my head, but Mr F (the trooper) was brewing up out front and chatting to chaps. The conversation with these 'chaps', who we had never met before was quite amusing :) They chatted among themselves for a good 10 minutes. The conversation was mainly about a Woman called Tina's, ample, incredibly wobbly bosom, which was prominently displayed where they sat, propped in front of her on the table for the evening. In thick South End London accents I heard details of how the "sight of 'Tinas t*ts' all night" had driven some of them to retreat and hide in their freezing tents. Unable to contain themselves. Much raucous laughter and expletives followed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One chap then commented on how organised Mr F was having a tea cosy for the pot 'and everyfink'. Mr F then replied, that it was down to the wife and pointed inside the van. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"What! You've got a lady in there?" one said in a terrified voice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Cor blimey, we've been effing and jeffing and all sorts out ere".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Frantic Mumbled murmurings of apologies followed... then one chap said loudy, "Tescos have got medium cheddar on offer at ours, 2 for 1, blimen lovely stuff it is".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once the 'cheese on offer' conversation was exhausted they drifted away and headed to the sanctuary of the pub. Possibly first checking to make sure 'Tina' was absent ;)</div>

Now then, the running bit of the title... Started last week with a friend doing a little bit of off road running. Possibly 'runpuffing' would be a better way to describe what actually happened. I can hear you laughing you know...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Its okay, I don't mind...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had a good laugh too...</div>

I'm not buying special clothing or shoes. Its a definite, use what you've got activity for us. My thoughts are that if early surfers last century could go surfing with wardrobe doors and knitted swimsuits, then I can do a bit of running in a skirt. Yes indeed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wore my Connie shoes, laced up snug. They were brilliant. I did'nt slip, my feet felt great, no sweaty toes or socks and they really enjoyed the adventure. I may make myself some Clara to use exclusively for this past time.</div>

Heart was pumping for England so I'm assuming its going to be good for me. Aiming for twice a week.</div>

My new toy, sorry, meant to write tool then. A stronger, easier eyelet setter. After setting 500 eyelets on the boots my hand nearly fell off... hence, the new, easier to use tool. Pretty colour too, which is always a bonus. Mr F never buys tools because they are a pretty colour. Its a good job someone here knows their priorities isn't it.</div>

That's about all I'm doing for Christmas. In fact I'm weaning myself off Christmas. I love this time of year, but its driving me a bit mad. Its an environmental disaster for one thing, and the hype and expectation is beyond belief... I'm humbugging so I must apologise if you are Christmas fan. I hope you enjoy every minute x I will too, but in a much tinier way :)</div>

Me in reflective mood earlier today. Post boot pattern making, pre boot marking. Hair washed earlier, but unbrushed. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Earlier in the week saw me working on the prototype PEASEBLOSSOM calf boot. Round toe shape, wide tongue and a roomy boot body to fit boot socks or wider calf's with tights. I did some major pattern tweaking on these, which in my head worked a treat, but on paper they looked ridiculous. That's the problem with shoe making. You are dealing with a 3D object (the foot) which you make a 2D pattern for. I snipped and sewed anyway, and then cried (literally) because it worked perfectly. Who knew making a boot could be so emotional...</div>

I wanted these to be easy to pop on and not require total unlacing. Happy to report that the wide tops and tongue mean that you can unlace just the top set and slip the boot off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Someone commented that ski hooks are great for speed lacing, but alas, I once heard a rather dreadful story about ski hooks on tall boots and it completely put me off using them. Someones lace got hooked up from boot to the other, while she was rushing about carrying a little one, and well, you can imagine how hard she fell... gulp. Lacing is good. Time to stop and reflect on the coming day for an extra minute :)</div>

Home, out across the Coombe taken yesterday before it was too dimpsy to see. A deer run heading down to the river. Difficult to see from this image, but incredibly steep and a long way down to the bottom of the valley. I remember when the children would follow deer runs to the bottom and back up again. Happy memories.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Working this weekend because next week has Friday missing and we are going away for the weekend. Those of you who reprimand me for not taking time off (thank you for caring my darlings), will be pleased to hear about this excursion... or horrified. Let me present the facts...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Friday is being spent all day for more inking torture. I use that word quite liberally because its upper back work, and anyone who has had work on their upper back will know Exactly What I am on About. I've got 6 hours booked in...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We then have a three hour drive to a field somewhere (?) to meet up with Mr Faerysteps bike group to spend the weekend camping. In November. Yep. I will arrive covered in cling wrap looking like a squid ink baguette from Subway and aching like mad. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This will either be utter folly and most likely end in our demise (November chaps, November...), or be a great adventure and one to remember. If I return on Sunday, I'll let you know ;)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally what a treat on Sunday! I was evicted from the kitchen while my youngest (littlest, who isn't quite so little anymore...) baked up a feast. This included the first mince pies of the season. The pastry was so light and buttery it melted in the mouth. It was such a lovely treat to have with a nice cup of tea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's what homemade baking is all about really isn't it. My dear Mum always used to say that the most important ingredient you can add is love, and if you left it out, you can always taste it. She was so right. But then, when you look back, our Mothers were often right weren't they x</div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/gJCchuZSy24/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gJCchuZSy24?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was strange to film for me, because I do it so often I really don't think what Im doing anymore. Like many makers, I go on autopilot. I think thats why doing any manual job is quite therapeutic. You can be lost in the task. It was interesting for me to see how much I fuss over the leather before marking! Hides are covered in flaws, simply because its a natural product. They can be front or back, and really sneaky flaws can sometimes hide in the light...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If this keeps you wide awake because you are finding it interesting then I'm so glad I made it. If on the other hand, it makes you go to sleep, then thats an extra bonus, relaxing is always good ;)</div>

I so enjoyed taking pictures of this batch. It was all so green! But, at the same time, it was like saying goodbye to Summer. Moving rapidly into a season of browns and golds and reds. Followed by the deepest greens of fir.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've had such a busy week, but then half term always is for parents is'nt it. I am very aware though that these times will pass, and that for me in fact, this is most probably my last half term with my youngest. This time next year she will already have turned 18, and so the luxury of outings mid week etc will be gone forever, never to return. So I made sure I took some time off this week so we could be together. It was so lovely.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I worked last weekend to make sure I really cracked on with the outstanding orders. There were lots of Victory red shoes and I must say, they rather cheered me on to the finish line. I've made so many custom shoes and boots this year that I'm feeling a smidge burnt out... it really is time to take a break from custom.</div>

I did manage to squeeze in cutting out 2 new tunic dresses which made me ever so happy. I have been meaning to for months but have'nt had time. The fabric is glorious linen / viscose blend, and the print is rather pretty too, but... unless I want to look like I just lost a fight with a curtain, the colour is a definite NO. I fear I am too old for white and pink :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've bought some dye to pop them in the machine for a colour spin. One will be deep blackberry, and the other a teal colour. I can never find dye colours I like so I pop it in a jam jar and add a teaspoon of different colours to tone them down or blend new ones. It's so exciting waiting for them to finish the cycle...</div>

We went on a long awaited family trip to Dunster Castle. Crossed the border to Somerset which was something in itself. Littlest drove us in 'her car' which was very exciting. Well, I expect it was... truth be told, I was keeled over in the back with my eyes closed for most of the journey. The older I get, the more I hate long journeys and motorways. Give me a lane with tall hedges and barely enough room to get a car down it, and I'm the happiest woman alive.</div>

The stairs, doors, front room, beams, airing cupboard, floors have all been finished at last. It's been 2 years of what seems like non stop decorating for me. Happily, I washed my last brush out this morning once the porch floor was finished. Home looks the bees knees and I am very proud. These pictures are in progress shots, so the floor probably does'nt have its top coat on. It does now :)</div>

The last thing I would like to do before Christmas is strip the varnish off the kitchen sink and sand and oil it. I should never have put varnish on to start with. It locks in any water that gets under it and stains the wood. We were going to update the kitchen and pop an old stainless sink in that I have, but to be honest, I can't be bothered! Decided to make do and mend and be grateful with what I have already.</div>

Plus, as if doing the house isn't enough, Mr F has started on the Cabin in the woods. Ripped out the back wall and is shifting the toilet. Here he is putting a new supporting beam up. Unfortunately... I am going to have decorate the Cabin when the building work is finished, but that won't be any time soon so thats okay. I am turning back time in there to 1930. My little time warp to visit and drink tea, and for family to come and stay in.</div>

As all orders are finished (in my workshop at least, Mr F still has work to do on their bottoms...), I dipped into the leather pile and marked and cut my first stock today. It felt a real treat. Absolute creative indulgence. Selfish shoemaking. Non prescriptive creativity. It was a joy. Look out for updates of finished stock. Its all going to be very unique and spontaneous. Proper battery charging stuff, hopefully not just for me, but, for you as well. There are after all, only so many pictures of black Lunas you can show ;)</div>

We are currently finishing orders ready to start on new stock from 1st November onwards. Expect a variety of styles, sizes and colours. Do follow on instagram or facebook for regular updates of whats on the worktable each day. I have to admit I am more than a little bit excited about this. It's when my job ceases to be work and becomes, very much, a case of "What colour shall I play with today?" Expect lots of work in progress shots and lots of special editions.</div>

Wisp boots were made available to order in your own colour choices during May, and it was so lovely to make them for you :)<br />
Lots of wonderful combinations with just a few shown above. I do like this boot. I keep meaning to make myself a pair and never quite get round to it. Must rectify that soon :)<br />
Made to order re-opens 1st July so if you fancy a pair full details are shown on the listing in the <b><a href="https://faerysteps.com/collections/made-to-order-shoes/products/wisp-boot-made-to-order" target="_blank">shop here.</a></b><br />

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Very, very exciting day today!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Fairysteps has had a name change across the web. Its just one letter, but, its a change nonetheless. The new place to find me is: faerysteps.com<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Why did I do this dastardly daring deed? Well… lots of reasons really, but heres a few good ones…</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
1. When I took the fairysteps domain in 2005, sadly the .com domain had been taken by a holding company who demanded £2000 for the domain sale :( Ive checked for the past 12 years to see if its been released. Nope. I wanted .com because I sell worldwide, its the first domain everyone types, and lastly its quick to say and type (less dots).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
2. A good while after I chose fairysteps I discovered that there was a shoe making factory in the north of England started in the 1930s which ceased trading decades ago. They went into liquidation a few years back I think. I dont want anyone typing in fairysteps to think Ive gone into liquidation.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
3. This is a very odd one… its funny, but somehow I realised that fairysteps has grown up. As my eldest daughter said, and she mirrored exactly what I felt about this, fairy makes me think more of childrens portrayals of pretty little pink tinkerbell type fairies, yet, faery… well that makes me think more of the wider world of Fae, those prickles of ‘otherness’. They arent all pretty and pink and teeny weeny. I envisage something much bolder and wilder and stronger. And in my own funny way, I create for faery, not fairy. If 'fairy’ is child, then 'faery’ is adult.Did that make sense?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
4. Always a bit of a nightmare having a business and trying to make sure you stay consistent across all social media platforms. That Nightmare with a capital N. Sadly I never managed to get that bit right on all platforms.I do now :) you can find me on: instagram, facebook, tumblr, pinterest, twitter and etsy as faerysteps</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
5. Business cards, leather branding inside the footwear and on the accessories and rubber stamps all say fairysteps still, but these will gradually be changed over. fairysteps.co.uk will remain and will always redirect you to the new shop address at faerysteps.com so no links are broken.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Thank you my darlings for reading this, just wanted to explain.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">

Good morning my dears.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Ive been thinking about how to word this ALL night long, so best to just crack on and tap out the words :)</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
After our days work was done Mr Fairysteps and I had our usual natter across the kitchen table last night and got down to the nitty gritty of how much work we both had lined up for the start of the year. It’s important when you are both self employed to do this occassionaly so that you don’t accidentally take on enough work for 6 people, when you are in fact only 2. It appears that his work commitments mean that his Fairysteps time will be limited till mid April, and probably beyond. Bearing in mind he is my ‘Sole Man’ this rather puts a spoke in the works.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Rather than make our wonderful customers wait for silly amounts of time for custom shoe orders I shall be closing the ‘Made To Order’ shoes section of the shop till further notice. The full team (that’s us two) have had to have a think about ‘stretching ourselves too thin’ by offering boots, shoes, bags and purses. Im always disappointing someone who is waiting for something that maybe I havent had time to make :( And, I don’t like disappointing customers who are waiting for ‘treasures’ to turn up in stock. Im thinking maybe I do need to specialise a bit more and focus on what I do best. Im a designer, I thrive best when being creative and for me, fairysteps boots are where my real passion lies. Plus, with the other half of the team being here in a limited capacity, I do have think carefully about monitoring just how much and what work I load that way. So… its looking like I may be getting a serious amount of boot making done this year. Woo hoo.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
In the meantime… I can of course beaver on with all sorts of treasure making in my workshop, including getting some limited edition specials ready for April, as well as trickling in a few regular new stock items. Did I mention excessive tea drinking? I will also crack on with some more time consuming button making too as you all loved them so much :) I can finish all those WIPs hanging around the workshop as well. I shall tidy my leathers and my patterns (much needed)…</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
All in all, Im going into a working hibernation mode till Spring, and am going to make sure that the fairysteps shoe elves are primed and ‘well oiled’ so that we will have oodles of in stock limited edition boots and shoes, ready for what will, hopefully, be a glorious summer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
<b style="box-sizing: border-box;">WARNING: </b></div>
<ul style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: outside; margin: 0px 0px 30px 35px; padding: 0px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 0.4em;"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">The shop stays open, so all stock items will remain in situ to tempt you…</b></li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 0.4em;"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">I will still be boring you to death on social media…</b></li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 0.4em;"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Peeks of any treasures I am making for listing now and come Spring will be shamelessly flaunted under your noses…</b></li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 0.4em;"><b style="box-sizing: border-box;">Made to Order may well appear next year, do watch out!</b></li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">
Do hope I’ve explained this properly and with the respect my truly wonderful, much valued customers and followers deserve.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans", HelveticaNeue, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather turned decidedly nippier home here so more layers were called for. I always find it a toss up between warmth vs movement... thick wooly jumpers arent an option because I find I get caught up in everything Im working on else. Very frustrating constantly unhitching yourself from shoe parts :) O dear... the socks don't match...</div>

Ive been very grateful for all the firewood Mr Fairysteps prepares for us now its colder. Nothing beats the joy of a real fire. But, warmth is the key and its a wonderful luxury to have a warm home. Parts of mine are very chilly, but some rooms are toasty and thats such a boost. This new stove (its second winter now) is really wonderful, so pleased with it. We had to chop it about to get the draw right, but theres no stopping it now.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So my dears, thats this week...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Plans for tomorrow are to finish a smock for my best friend. Well, its actually a mock up smock to get the sizing correct. I shall overdye this one and cut into the rather precious koi patterned linen once we have had a fitting. I can keep this one for messing about in. Im using an ikea furnishing cotton so its looking very much like a shower curtain at present. If wearing shower curtains catches on, then Im at the front of the queue</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I may get some more logs up to the front porch too so I can save time next week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Plus, if Im very good, first thing in the morning I shall make bread and mince pies as there a pot of clotted cream sadly sitting unattended in the fridge...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy weekend all,</div>
